Darkknight Daughter

This was decidedly not Gotham as she knew it.  The absence of several familiar landmarks was indication enough of that.  She had tried, without success, to find the Justice Society's headquarters, a brownstone in the heart of Gotham.  A quick checked had confirmed that her apartment was occupied by persons other than herself.

All this simply added up to the fact that she was not on Earth-2.  Though with an infinite number of possible worlds, this was not the maddening revelation it might have been to some.  Further checking, however, had confirmed that she was not on Earth-1 either.  The absence of a Justice League teleporter, the location of which she was familiar with, suggested that she was not on their world either.

She was, however, able to eliminate a number of world's from her list.  Neither Earth-S, Earth-X, or Earth-Prime had a Gotham City.  It left open the possibility of Earth-3, home to the villainous Crime Syndicate, but somehow, that did not seem likely.

Was there a Batman here in this world?  A League?  A Society?  Some other hero that she could turn to?  And even if there was, would they believe her story?  Parallel Earths alone with a hard enough concept to understand, but her own, with her status as Batman's daughter, could be seen as even more improbable.

Further, it looked as though she had slipped, not just across the multiverse, but in time as well.  There were too many models of cars she didn't recognize, too many other little things that suggested a time ahead of her own.

Standing on a rooftop, overlooking the city, the Huntress had never felt more alone.

Mighty wings circled silently above her, then folded and vanished as they passed through the shadow of a building.

Dämmerung entered the shadows behind and to one side of the stranger and perked her ears toward the woman, listening and well able to hear even subvocalizations. The newcomer's body language suggested a degree of familiarity with the city, but at the same time bewilderment and a desire for something.

-She's uneasy.- One ear flicked back in sympathy even as she spoke. "Vhat is your business in Gotham?"

"I am Dämmerung, her servant." Those strange dark eyes, seeming to lack both white and pupil, continued to study her.

The winged one relaxed slightly and looked away, ears perked toward some sound in the distance. She had read the younger woman as was her wont, almost like a book, and now she weighed this reading against what her heart and the Starsinger were saying.

"Vhy are you here?" she asked, seemingly absently.

Dämmerung chuckled, her eyes fixed on the direction that they were going. She tried calling home again and put her ears back at the lack of response. What was Bree getting into?

That thought made her back mane crawl.

"I don't think so." She watched the lights of Gotham fall back behind them, then looked ahead again.

"I mean your surname." The little one gave a chilling scowl. "I want to know your surname, please."

Even with the hastily added please it sounded like a command.

"Wayne!" said the child, frowning. "But you are not a Bruce. Nor are you a Brenda by another name. Your face is different."

Then she blinked and gravely offered a small hand. "Forgive me. My name is Brenda Wayne. But I prefer to be called Bree."

She heaved a put upon sigh and grumbled. "I know."

She straightened her skirt, head cocked as she gave Alfred a calculating look, then bolted for the darkness outside the spotlights.

The butler moved faster than one would think possible for a man of his years, and the next thing Helena heard was an outraged squeak as he scooped Bree into his arms.

"Excuse me, Miss," he said to her as he toted the sulking Bree off to the costume vault.

He yawned and wagged his tail harder.

"Excuse me." Bree gently tugged on the hem of Helena's loaned sweatshirt, big eyes serious.

Alfred, in the meanwhile, was whipping up a lovely light supper.

"Brenda has said that we must not speak of the night jobs when we are upstairs," the little one whispered gravely.

"I think that it would be permissible to overlook that rule in this case," said Alfred without turning around.

Bree started and looked at him with big eyes, still unused to his seeming ability to know nearly everything.

"Yes. Thank you." She crunched happily, then eyed Alfred as he finished up the cleaning.

"Now then, Miss Bree, would you like bubbles in your bath?" He clapped his hands briskly.

Bree eyed the door, then scowled absently as Alfred placed himself in her flightpath.

"What's that, Miss?" Alfred kept his eyes on his young charge, who was making a feint to the right.
