Peace offering to a nephew
Bree wandered into Adao's room and walked over to look at his book. "What are you reading?"
Adao grunted, unable to look away from the book
Undaunted, the six year old took off her shoes and got up to sit on the bed beside him and look at it also. "It is pictures of trees and mountains?"
He grunted once again ignoring her as he continued to read.
"You like this, yet you are afraid of animals?" She frowned and leaned her little chin on his shoulder. "I do not understand."
"Animals smell."
"But so do you, sometimes." There was no insult in her voice, only reason.
"HEY I do not smell!" he complained.
"Not now," she said soothingly, then pressed her nose to his shoulder. "Now you smell very nice. Is that some of Jim's aftershave?"
"Leave me alone" he grumbled.
"No," she said calmly. "You are my son, or you would be if I were an adult. I want to be your friend."
"No," he complained. "Shoo!"
"I have chocolate."
"Hmm ok, hand it over."
The miniature Toblerone bar was produced and presented, though Bree was suddenly distracted by a small four-legged robot that was walking across the bed.
"Thanks." He smiled opening it and giving her a piece before putting a piece in his mouth.
"You are welcome." She brightened and popped the candy into her mouth, savoring the taste as she let it melt on her tongue.
He then turned his attention back to the book.
Bree was content to let him do so, she returned her chin to his shoulder and settled down to look at it with him.
"Stop watching me"
"I am watching the book. It is very pretty."
He sighed. "You're odd."
"I know."
"What did you want anyway?"
"As I said, I want to be your friend." She stirred slightly and reached out to hit the robot, which went flat with a squeak.
"Ok done, now go."
"No." She frowned. "I want to stay here at the moment and look at your book with you."
He handed her the book. "You look."
Her chin wobbled. "But I want to look at it with you."
"I don't want to."
"Oh." Her face fell and she set the book down to turn and slide off the bed. "I am sorry. Good bye."
He sighed. "Reading books is a one person activity...." He considered a moment. "Want to go fly?"
That made her blink. But then her cold little serious face bloomed into a smile and she raced for the door. "I will get my uniform."
"Uniform?"
"So that no one will know who I am." She skidded to a stop and looked at him. "You should wear yours too."
"Ok... wait I have one?" he asked.
"The costume that Brenda worked on with you and that Alfred made," she reminded him.
"Right."
So they went.
