Looking for Prey

Thick leather boots gripped the edge of the rooftop as a young man peered over a rough end of the city. The east end, in particular. With the awful blackout that occurred not an hour ago, he was pretty busy. There had been no sign of Batwoman, and he was very glad of that. He was not...afraid, per se, just very wary when working the same time she was. He assumed she was very protective of her territory, which included the City, and he wasn't going to simply stand aside and let her be the only one cashing in on the fun.

Hunter grinned, there was a very poorly organized bank robbery that he had just foiled and the bumbling idiots had no idea who they were up against. He was new at this vigilante stuff, but after all he had been around criminals most of his life, unfortunately, and was too trained to be a fighter. Martial arts was something of a hobby in school, but he had persued it seriously once he had gotten older. He knew he would need it, with the kind of people hanging around at home. His theories were put to practice, of course, once he decided to don the costume.

Ah, looters. Will they never learn? He double-checked his crossbow and threw out one of his nifty new grappling guns, swinging to the chaos below.

As soon as the grenade left her hand he skidded in front of the door, spraying his bolts into the room, aiming particularly for those in the back, and his aim was true and they were pinned. He shoved another bolt in and aimed it for the man who looked like he was in charge, in the dim light and confusion he seemed to be the one carrying himself a little higher than the others, wearing finer clothes he had noticed. But before he got a chance to even yell his threat for them to shaddap and sit down, someone started firing a machine gun madly everywhere, seemingly not even caring if he hit his own men.

"Hit the deck!" he yelled mainly to Spoiler as he threw himself on the ground to avoid the shots.

Spoiler luckily had not moved from the ground, and covered her head with her hands as the machine gun fired off. She rolled in a tear-gas grenade, hoping to get the shooter unbalanced.

Hunter was now doubly and triply glad he has this experienced girl on his side, as the tear gas grenade blew and sent acrid smoke everywhere. He took a deep breath of fresh air before diving in slightly recklessly, as the shooter had not stopped shooting just yet but he hit the man's leg's with a heavy tackle, sending the machine gun flying and clacking against the wall.

Spoiler grabbed the machine gun, and the stood in the doorway, "all right, everyone hands up. My partner and I got you surrounded!"

He wrestled with the man for a bit before he shoved him roughly against a metal filing cabinet, and he stopped struggling and began groaning. Hunter grabbed his crossbow and pointed it too, in case the thugs tried to rush Spoiler. He wondered vaguely in the back of his mind if she really would use the gun, or even if the criminals knew that or not.

"Yeah, so don't try anythin' stupid." He pointed it closer to the nearest fellow with the black case-thing in the middle of the table. "You. Get your hands outta the bag and up where I can see 'em."

Spoiler would do anything she had to do, and right now she carried an air of -we-are-not-fooling-around. Was the best way to deal with criminals.

"Now what was so darm important to attempt this?"

No one said anything at first, but eventually most eyes turned to a man with a blue suit and a black fedora, still croutching slightly over the bag-box-safe whatever it was in the middle of the table they were all looking at. He shrugged.

"I dunno."

Hunter pointed the crossbow closer to him. "We'd like ya to talk now, mister. 'Cause we're gonna find out what you were doin' either way. This is the healthier way. Get it?"

The man glared at him, but didn't say anything else.

"All of this for something you do not know? I do not believe it. You got to have some inkling of what it is, now you going to tell me or should my partner start to get rough on you all?"

"Do yer worst, toots and tights."

"Ya blind? I ain't wearin' tights, it's leather," Hunter grimaced. He grabbed the box-thing and dug around inside, feeling for some kind of jewels. He picked up one and it was a sort of a rough-looking thing, perhaps an uncut diamond but what was spectacular about it was its color. A clear cerulean.

"You guys have taste, I like," it glowed brilliantly between his gloved fingers. "So what were ya plannin' to do with this?"

He didn't say a thing.

Spoiler wondered what the item was, "they are covering for someone. Think your boss will be mad at you boys? Is it worth all of this?"

The leader laughed bitterly. "Look, whatevah you do to us? It'll be a piece o' cake to whatevah he's gonna do."

Hunter reached into the bag deeper, not keeping his eyes off of the leader but picking up a few stones. They were almost glowing, it looked like, and were of different colors. A black one, a red one...but the highest number was green. The green had a sort of sickly gaze to them, as he held one big fat one in the palm of his hand. He had no idea what they were, but he could tell they weren't ordinary jewels.

"He who?" Spoiler glanced over to the glowing stones. There was something unsettling about them, and she did not like it. "Because trust me, our boss is a lot more scarier than yours! Do you want me to call Her in?"

"Hey, wait, she's not my boss," Hunter blurted out indignantly before he could realize that his big mouth could get them in trouble. Leader-boy grinned, sensing dissension in the ranks.

"We ain't tellin' youse diddly. So get lost."

"Fine, we will just take these gems with us then. And take you all in to jail. Then you can explain to your boss that we have the rocks. Spoiler shrugged. "Go ahead Hunter, put them somewhere safe."

This finally caused some reaction in said criminals. The leader looked shifty, and shrugged.

"Wells, in jail, at least we'll be safe from 'im. You just get 'em to goes easy on us, lady."

Hunter tossed one of the stones up in the air almost lazily, causing the other people around him to cringe. "So what are these babies?"

"Some kinda meteor rocks. A lotta 'em are in the harbor and stuff."

"Meteor rocks?" gosh that sounded similiar. Spoiler looked over to Hunter, "We have to get them to the Bat crimelab."

She looked over to the boys, "please, you do not think that your boss does not know how to get in and out of the jail without being noticed?"

Hunter had no idea what they really were, but noticed the way the other guys treated them. Almost a fearful reverence. "Bat crimelab?" He cringed, he didn't want to have to deal with the likes of her.

"Lady, our boss don't care 'bout us once we're in jail. And 'asides, the feds'll protect us good." His eyes showed that he didn't believe that for one moment.

"Do not worry, I can get us in without the Bat knowing." Spoiler was on a roll, so she laughed at the goons. "The feds? Most crime bosses own the fed!"

That felt like a load off, and Hunter grinned. He began packing the stones back in, the faint glowy property had him worried. What if they were radioactive or something? He finally closed the box-bag thing and zipped it up.

"Yeah, and it's the crime boss that could use a lotta information offa us guys," bantered the leader back, trying to win the arguement that had sprung up, like it mattered.

"Well once you see him, and you will see him because neither Hunter nor I are going to ask for added protection for any of you. We only do that for people who help us out. You can tell him that we got the stones." Spoiler growled at him.

"Ready partner?" She looked over to Hunter.

"Ready, pahdner," he said with a forced country accent. He shouldered the bag--which was surprisingly heavy, was it laced with lead to protect against the radiation of the stones, which he suspected? His crossbow was held tightly when he got both hands free from shouldering the bag. The leader looked sullen.

"Well... guess that is it boys. We will get you ready for the police, but that is it. We ain't speaking to them on your behalf, not with your lack of help."

Hunter felt the weight of the bag some, but he ignored the strain. It would be too much of a mess outside for them to deliver the criminals to the police, they would try to make a break for it in the crowd and the confusion. He sidled over to Spoiler, whispering inconspciously, "We prolly gotta tie 'em up. All I got on me is some o' this computer wire laying about from this broken computer here...dunno if that's enough."

Spoiler gave him a smile through the mask, "you forget partner, I am the gal with all the gadgets." She pulled out a small gun-shaped object, and fired it at the goons one by one. It fired off a glue-type mess of goo that stuck the goons to the walls one by one.

"That should do it."

That caused Hunter to whistle impressively again. "You gotta get me summa that. Nice. Okay, we're outta here." He turned to the door, ignoring the cries of the criminals behind him. The little shop was still empty, crushed glass all over the floor, but the riot outside, it seemed to be, was quelling down.
